Mudding, also known as mud boggin or mud bogging, is taking off. All you need are people who love trucks and a quantity of mud to drive in. The two together have created a new sport that is increasing in popularity.
Anyone who has grown up in the country has probably had the experience of driving a pick-up through mud for something to do. Just as little kids are fascinated by making mud pies, when we get to be big kids, we still love playing in the mud. Mud bogging takes what was an idle pastime and transforms it into an event.
The point of the competition is to make it through what amounts to a trench of mud. Maybe that sounds easy to you? It’s not. It takes a powerful engine to make it without getting stuck.
The driver who wins the event is the one who makes it through in the best speed. It’s just that simple. Often, there isn’t even a prize for winning, other than the chance to brag about the feat.
Mudding isn’t just fun for the competitors. It’s become a popular spectator sport as well. And while there may not be a big prize at the end, there’s probably a buck or two traded on the sidelines, at least in a friendly wager. Sometimes, a collection will be taken up for the winner as well.
If you’re interested in getting involved in mudding yourself, spend some time looking at the kinds of trucks that are being used. You’re going to need a 4×4 with a powerful engine to even have a chance. But engine power isn’t all you need.
Getting through that mud trench is going to take some driving skill. If you’re not experienced in this yet, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t do well at first. The mudding 4×4 experience is supposed to be fun, first and foremost, so get yourself a truck and come on down.
The fun starts when you have your very own truck It is not about money It is all about bragging rights. Click here to watch videos of a mudding 4×4.
Some footage taken of the mud drag competition in Hunneywell Valley taken in July 2009. The video footage is not in order, so the pit is deeper in some sections, but it got very deep by day 3.

Hillbilly Proud made it to Truck Night at Yankee Lake in Brookfield, OH for the first time on May 6, 2011. Truck Night was a blast and Yankee Lake is pretty awesome. The mudding park is open every Friday through the summer and some Saturdays. The park features many holes, mud trails, hill climbs, rock crawling, and a tug-o-war pad. There is also music and dancing, lots of vendors, and plenty to eat. Hopefully we’ll make it back soon. Music by Buck and Company.
