mud truck build up PART 1
Build of 1966 IH as it was first put on the road in Jan 2000. Lots of learning and changes since then to be shown in later movies. This 1st version had Dana70F front, RA15 rear, Turbo 400 and all three proved too weak. But I had fun finding the weak spots!!

Thanks. YOu are right on the mark about the old IH’s being tanks. I really have to say that even the original IH sheet metal is solid. Sure, they were prone to rust but if you kept that at bay you had a real truck. Hell, I like the solid feel on the doors when they slam shut!! I just can’t find that anywhere on today’s trucks.

Nice rig, I love the body style. Even stock that was one of a truck. My great-uncle had a ‘66 3/4-ton stepside with the Black Diamond six and a 4-speed. The truck was a tank; lasted over 20 years as a farm truck!

The super swampers …
The super swampers in this specific video are TSL (three stage lug) from Interco Tire Co and are 44″ dia x 18.5 wide section width. 44″ will be very tight onthe front axles against the fire wall/sheet metal unless you move the axle forward a bit, say 2″ if you only do a 4″ lift. The other option is to cut sheet metal. I bet 35s fit with a 2″ lift.

The “legal” gvw is 11,000 pounds. That said, the vehicle has 25,000 pounds worth of axles under her. I selected these large axles primarly to handle the torque required for the 49″ tires, not the weight. I have her sprung stiff enough to handle about 13,000 pounds GVW and easily trailer my 13,000 pound boat/trailer combo.

I would stay at 36″ …
I would stay at 36″ tires, asbsolute max unless you want to swap rears to bigger units. The 15 inch rims you have now are just fine. The rim width and tread with should be similar. The rim should be no narrower than 2 inches less than the tread.on that size of tire. I like the smaller rims for taller sidewalls and more float off road. Use the bigger rims to clear brakes or a high “performance” higway ride.

Thanks. Having a sand blast chamber 8feet 6 inches long is a real joy when you want to do a full size pumpkin. I set the rear on jack stands inside the chamber and can rotate it with a bit of effort lie a rotiesseri.

I have no experience with the 392. Every 345 I have seen was nearly invulnerable and SIMPLE. Perhaps the 392 is just more of a good thing?
